Detroit Tigers | Can The Tigers Regroup In 2010?

The Detroit Tigers 2009 season was suppose to be a great one for the city of Detroit – it turned out to be one huge let down instead. While the Tigers had a divisional lead since May – in baseball it’s not how you start but how you finish. The Tigers statistically blew the biggest divisional lead in the shortest amount of time – 3 games with 4 to play. The Tigers were given one more chance in a one game playoff with the Minnesota Twins but the Tigers fell in a very exciting, intense game.
The Tigers have many quality players such as Miguel Cabrera, Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco, Brandon Inge, Aubrey Huff, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen and Justin Verlander. The Tigers couldn’t stay consistent in the second half of the season and were beaten by lesser quality teams which caused them to lose the AL Central Division.
The silver lining in all this is Justin Verlander who pitched better then he ever has. Verlander lead the majors in strikeouts with 269, games pitched and innings with 35 and 240, also tieing for the league lead with 19. Verlander did all he could to help Detroit play October baseball – but the rest of the team faulted. Dontrelle Willis and Nate Robertson were suppose to give the Tigers rotation some depth – they were a no show all season long.
The Tigers players individual averages besides Miguel Cabrera were low – Curtis Granderson batted .249, Brandon Inge batted .230, Aubrey Huff batted .189 and Carlos Guillen batted .242. A team can’t expect to hold a division lead with their starting players batting below .250.
It will be interesting to see who the Tigers stay with and release in 2010. Obviously some change must be made so the Tigers don’t perform the same giving up a division lead in game 163.
